The new Spring/Summer 2014 collection by the lovely Samantha Pleet is absolutely, mind-blowingly good. 'Arcadia' was inspired by the journals of Charles Darwin during his journeys to Tiera Del Fuego and features Samantha's signature hand drawn prints and stunning silhouettes. While we're head over heels for the whole collection, we're especially digging the 'Token' and 'Promise' dresses. Visit the Samantha Pleet website for more info.
Melbourne-based label Handsom recently released their Spring/Summer range, 'A Collection', and we're pretty smitten with the fabulous trousers, shirt dresses and boyfriend-style blazers. The collection exudes a relaxed style, effortlessly mixing crisp neutrals with tones of mustard, navy and a surprising pop of plaid print. Following on from the subtle preppy tones that have come through in past seasons, Handsom’s English heritage once again comes through with their light-hearted take on sports-prep essentials. To get your mitts on any of the Handsom SS13 pieces visit their online store or pop into their flagship store on Melbourne’s Gertrude Street. We also suggest checking out the collection's Moonrise Kingdom-esque campaign, shot by photographer Sheree Porter.
Brisbane-based fashion label Alice Nightingale have just launched their new spring range, 'Spring Blooms', featuring dreamy dresses, scalloped collars and cosy knits perfect for days spent frolicing in the sun. We caught up with designer Alice Veivers to talk about her latest collection and what she has planned next for the label. Tell us a little about Spring Blooms. How would you define the style of the collection? My new spring range is all very ladylike! The collection is perfect for picnic season; with flowing dresses, pencil prints, handmade cropped jumpers and below the knee plaid skirts. What was on your mind when you were designing this collection? For a long time I had been thinking about a botanical range, inspired by old floral diagrams. After playing around with some sketches, the flower print came together and tied in perfectly with the colours of the Marigold dresses and the lace jumpers I’d been knitting. A few of the designs have also ended up with a ‘1960’s schoolgirl’ vibe to them, which started with a long plaid skirt and grew from there! Which fabrics did you work with for this collection?
Along with my new cotton print, I’ve used soft faille’s that flow beautifully in the Marigold dresses as well as a pure cotton blouse with a scalloped collar. For the first time I’ve also created one of the fabrics from scratch! Using my vintage hand operated knitting machines, the Dahlia jumpers are made from forest green Australian wool that sits softly in delicate lace! Prints have always featured in your designs but you've recently started creating your own, will this be something we continue to see in Alice Nightingale collections? Yes! I’ve really taken to print design in the past 12 months and plan to keep them coming. The next few seasons have been planned out with prints included and I’ll also be using my watercolour designs in an upcoming artist collaboration! Do you have a favourite piece from the collection? The Sweet Pea dress would have to be my favourite, I put a lot of love into both the print and the pattern design and was so happy with the final result. How do you think your label stands out from other young designers in the industry? My emphasis, as a designer, has always been on quality. People really notice when a garment is well made and fits perfectly. I was very lucky to have known what I wanted to do from an early age and really loved learning to pattern make and sew. Now, I think my love of handmade fashion and making ‘few of a kind’ pieces helps me to stand out! Do you have any exciting plans for the label in the near future? I’m currently preparing for my first Melbourne Finders Keepers Market in October! Along with my spring collection, I’ll be bringing down some hand knit pieces and new dresses from my upcoming collaboration with local artist Launa Winship. To purchase anything from the Spring collection pop over to Alice's etsy store. We're partial to pretty things so it's only natural that we would love the new collection by Brooklyn based illustrator and textile designer, Leah Goren. Even though the pieces themselves are rather basic, it's Leah's unique illustrative style that really sets her garments apart from others out there at the moment. Our favourites would have to be the sateen Blue Bird and Girl Faces babydoll dresses. You can check out the new collection and many more goodies by Leah online here.
Only A Sunny Smile is the Spring Summer collection from UK label, I K N O W by Isabel Knowles. The collection is inspired by Gatsby's garden parties, dancing until dawn and weekends in the country with Bertie Wooster. Each piece in the collection is named after a female character from P. G. Wodehouse's 'Jeeves and Wooster' stories, which are Isabels absolute favourites. To find out more about this charming collection head over to Isabel's blog. You can also buy your very own I K N O W pieces here.
Vintalier is a vintage, pre-loved clothing and accessories store in Portland, OR that began in 2009 as a blog to help people find and fall in love with unique vintage pieces and keep up on fashion trends. Two years later, they began selling a curated collection of their own. Vintalier’s mission is to improve the vintage shopping experience and to celebrate it as easy, fun and often more affordable than traditional or mainstream retail. We're diggin' their latest Spring/Summer collection - especially the polka dot maxi dress! You can shop the Vintalier look here.
Storyboard artist, animator and blogger, Ale, recently released her very first clothing collection – Rosaspina Vintage Handmade. Designed by Ale herself and sewn by her mother, the vintage inspired collection is a perfect mixture of new and old. We love the pretty printed blouses, ladylike pleated skirts and of course the dainty day dresses. A couple of the designs have already sold out so head over to the Rosaspina Vintage online store to see what's left!
The tata naka fall 2013 collection is pretty damn amazing! Everything from the clothing to the styling to the art direction, is just impeccable. In true 80s style, there's bold artsy designs including hearts and geometric colour-blocked shapes splashed onto 50s pencil and knee-length voluminous skirts, A-line dresses, cigarette pants, wool sweaters, and silk button downs. Our favourites from the collection include the cheerleader inspired dresses and the gorgeous colour-blocked blazers and jackets. It's kind of like Grease meets Sixteen Candles, and we like it.
